PPMI will conduct a study on designing and adapting school buildings, grounds and facilities for sustainability education in the EU

The European Green Deal outlines key targets and objectives for the EU's green and sustainable transition. Building and renovating in an energy and resource-efficient way' is one of the key policy areas where transformational change is needed to achieve the European Green Deal. To further strengthen this pillar of work, the New European Bauhaus (NEB) aim to translate the aspects of the EGD focusing on building and renovation into tangible change on the ground. At the same time, sustainability is findings its way into the education policy agenda too (e.g., in the ambitions for the European Education Area and in the Council Conclusions of learning for the green transition and sustainable development).

This study will investigate the progress towards sustainability both from the perspective of construction and building infrastructure, and from the perspective of education and training. The study team will identify good practices and prepare policy recommendations to make education infrastructure and learning environments more sustainable and provide higher quality LfS across primary and secondary school education. The study will identify the benefits, challenges and opportunities of greening schools and learning environments for LfS, and the prospects for improving student learning, health and well-being in the process. The study has three main parts: 1) mapping of practice and policies at the national level and institutions; 2) evaluation and assessment of the policies and approaches for supporting sustainability and sustainability competences 3) synthesis of findings.

So far, no EU wide study to map, compare and critically evaluate approaches at the intersection of physical infrastructure and learning for sustainability exist. This study is therefore novel in its focus and scope and will provide invaluable information to the European Commission on how to strengthen EU and MS level policy development in this area.
