On 8 October, the European Commission published the Apply AI Strategy that aims to boost AI adoption and innovation in strategic sectors and strengthen the EU’s technological sovereignty. The strategy outlines concrete measures to harness AI's transformative potential and encourages an AI first policy and a 'buy European' approach.
We are happy to share that PPMI | Part of the Verian Group contributed research insights to the preparation of the strategy. Throughout this spring, our study team analysed the current and emerging use cases for AI in 5 sectors of the EU economy: defence, energy, climate and environment, cultural and creative industries, and electronic communications.
Having identified impactful applications for AI in each industry, we explored prerequisites for their wider adoption and scaling – such as technical requirements, computing power, ethical considerations, skills needs, legal basis and many other aspects. Looking into model development, we described the various approaches companies undertake: cooperating with each other, with governments, with open-source communities, or going fully in-house. We then analysed the scalability potential of these use cases and showcased prominent examples from European companies pioneering these technologies. The study team further validated the findings during almost 30 in-depth interviews with EU-based companies and researchers, which helped to sharpen and deepen the insights.
Our team additionally participated in sectoral workshops, which gathered industry experts and representatives in a structured dialogue. There, the study team presented the main use cases to workshop participants and collected feedback.
The final analytical reports prepared by PPMI | Part of the Verian Group served as supporting evidence for the preparatory process of the Apply AI strategy.
