Research Assistant
The first step into the world of policy research. Provides assistance to colleagues, helps to collect data, contributes to events... from creating buzz on social media onwards.  

Junior Researcher
Is familiar with some of the tricks and tips of policy research. Helps more senior colleagues. Knows the difference between data and evidence. Every task is a learning experience.

Researcher
Knows the ways and means of a professional policy researcher. Some are more into quants, others into quals. Provides clients with evidence-based answers. Asks good questions.

Senior Researcher
Well versed in both the art and the science of policy research. Gets things done, sometimes against the odds. A role model for younger colleagues. Can research management and manage researchers. 

Research Manager
Been there, done that. Manages teams, big and small. Knows the tools and the people who can make or break an assignment. Providing feedback and inspiration is just as important as regression analysis.

Research Director
Takes care of the company's business in a policy area. Knows what gives us the cutting edge. Never stops learning.  

Junior data scientist
Is curious and learns fast. Has already worked with Python/R/SQL and is able to show it. Helps others, and understands that it‘s a long journey.

Data scientist
Advanced at data collection, processing and manipulation. Knows the difference between good and bad-quality data, and how to check this. Handles Python/MongoDB/graph databases/Elastic Search at an advanced level. Writes good, clean code. Works with others proactively and effectively.

Senior data scientist
Leads processes end-to-end, including one or more of: web scraping, natural language processing, machine learning, machine translation, elastic search, APIs, process automation, data integration, taxonomy building, analytics. Understands the purpose and meaning of the data collected. Able to communicate results to others in words, both written and spoken.

Being a public policy researcher at PPMI requires five types of competences: analytical, methodological, written and verbal communication, management, and leadership. We support the development of these competences through our learning policy. We also greatly value certain personality traits, such as showing initiative, taking responsibility, helping others, and striving to improve.
