Verian Brussels and PPMI launch project for ECDC to develop a community of practice in social and behavioural sciences

The aim of the project is to strengthen the capacity of EU/EEA Member States to prevent and prepare for communicable disease outbreaks by combining knowledge sharing, capacity building through training and a Community of Practice (CoP) to foster peer learning and innovation.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health systems and societies of EU countries has highlighted the scale and severity of the impact that communicable disease outbreaks can have on modern societies, and the urgency of preventing and preparing for future outbreaks. The recent pandemic has highlighted the need to adopt and integrate multidisciplinary approaches to tackle public health threats posed by communicable diseases in policies and actions at EU level.

The Commission's new framework package on health security, adopted in 2022, extends the mandate of the ECDC and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to strengthen prevention, preparedness and response to future communicable disease outbreaks at Union level. Most relevant to this project is the strengthened mandate for the ECDC, which provides the Agency with enhanced competencies for epidemiological surveillance, reporting and monitoring for outbreak preparedness and response.

Verian and PPMI, together with EHMA - European Health Management Association, Dr Kristina Curtis, UCL Centre for Behaviour Change, Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, will map and engage stakeholders, provide trainings and build and manage the CoP.
