PPMI to conduct a study on national and institutional policies and approaches to education for environmental sustainability (EES)

Committed to the implementation of SDGs, the EU has brought sustainable development at the heart of its political agenda. Having ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016 and under its wider 2030 climate and energy framework, the European Union is committed to achieve at least 40% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, as part of the European Green Deal, Europe aims to be a climate-neutral continent by 2050. Education is one of the key tools in achieving these objectives. The European Green Deal highlights the role of schools and higher education institutions in addressing the issue of environmental sustainability by developing necessary values, attitudes, and competences in learners to act and live sustainably.

To-date no stock-taking exercise has been conducted on the level of integration of EES in education systems across the EU, and challenges and opportunities associated with it. The key objective of this study is therefore to contribute to closing this evidence gap.

Under this study, PPMI in collaboration with EUN, will map the policies and approaches to EES in Member States at national and institutional levels and analyse five inspirational cases on EES with potential of scaling-up. As part of the project, the study team will also organise an Expert workshop with leading experts in the area of education for environmental sustainability and education for sustainable development to validate results and to collect their insights for successful promotion of EES across Europe. The results of the study will inform Commission’s policy actions in promoting environmental sustainability in the context of the European Education Area and building a ’Green Europe’.
