Network of experts on the social dimension of education and training (NESET) 2022

Social inclusion, in and through education and training, is of the utmost importance when it comes to laying foundations for the development of more prosperous and more cohesive European societies. All Member States face challenges in ensuring equal access, quality and effective governance within all levels of education, from early childhood education and care (ECEC) and compulsory schooling through to vocational education and training (VET), higher education, and adult learning. Action is necessary to advance European-level policy development and cooperation in education and training, in order to support Member States’ efforts to modernise and improve their education systems, and to make them more equitable and inclusive. Thus, the overall objective of NESET, as an advisory Network, is to contribute to the improvement of European-level policy development and cooperation in education and training in order to support and supplement the efforts of Member States to improve and innovate their education systems that combine quality, equity and ensure equal opportunities for all.

NESET Network is a DG EAC project which has been coordinated by PPMI since 2015. The network is a continuation of NESET II (2015-2018) which was predecessed by NESSE (2007–2010) and NESET (2011–2014) networks. 2022 marked the fourth year of the current NESET cycle (2019-2022).

PPMI has mapped and created a network of experts working on the social dimension of education and training (NESET), which currently unites over 60 members and almost 120 affiliated experts. NESET is an advisory network of experts that provides reliable, independent and rigorous scientific support, country-specific expertise and advice to the European Commission, in relation to the equity and social aspects of all types and levels of education and training.

The main NESET outputs delivered for the year 2022 included three analytical reports covering the topics of zero violence in schools, multilingual education in kindergartens and quality assurance in higher education. NESET experts were also active in providing ad hoc expertise support to DG EAC in their work on the implementation of EEA (e.g., supporting the initiative on Pathways to school success) and inclusive education in the context of a large number of displaced people from Ukraine.
The project required concise, clear, and user-friendly communication in English, translating technical and scientific information into digestible content for non-scientific audiences, especially policy-makers, through various channels such as the NESET website, social media, and quarterly newsletters. Working with IT tools was essential, utilising text editors and content management systems used to curate the content on the NESET website. Additionally, proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript allowed for the creation of ad hoc functionalities and visual enhancements on web pages. The project's scope also includes the design and production of visual materials, including one-pagers with infographics summarising analytical report deliverables, promotional videos.
