Education is a crucial contributor to competitiveness, employability, social inclusion and active citizenship. Widespread access to quality education and training is a driver of economic growth, social cohesion, research and innovation – and dramatically increases citizens' prospects for personal development. Beyond direct economic benefits, there is substantive evidence on the relationship between education and social outcomes including health, civic engagement and subjective well-being, lower rates of crime and violence, lower rates of poverty, and, generally, a more smoothly functioning society.
Starting from January 2021, PPMI coordinates the European Expert Network on Economics of Education (EENEE), a project of DG EAC, that covers the economic aspects of education and training. The topics of expected returns, future demand for skill, schooling quality and educational production, human capital, educational finance, research and innovation in education, and education for sustainable growth (incl. economic growth, green economy and technological innovation) fall under the scope of the Network.
The Network implements three essential functions: knowledge brokerage, advisory and knowledge dissemination. As a knowledge broker, EENEE provides analytical reports and policy briefs. As an advisor, the Network offers reliable, independent and rigorous scientific support, country-specific expertise and advice to the European Commission in the format of replies to ad-hoc questions, summaries of the latest research trends in the area, and participation in Commission's events. Finally, as a knowledge disseminator, the Network spreads the knowledge through a variety of channels, including a dedicated website, webinars, social networks, etc.
The Network brings together over 30 high-level experts working in the field of economics of education, covering all 27 EU Member States, the UK, the US, Turkey and the Western Balkan region.
